Community meeting focuses on proposed environmental centre
York Region is holding a public meeting Tuesday to discuss the Community Environmental Centre proposed for an industrial expanse in the Hwy. 7 and Creditstone Rd. area.
The meeting, taking place at the Riviera Parque Banquet Hall on Dec. 4, will feature an information session at 5 p.m. and a presentation at 7 p.m., concluding with a planned question-and-answer period.
Already approved by York Regional Council, the planned environmental centre will allow residents to drop off waste material — including building materials and old electronics — that can’t or shouldn’t be thrown out with curbside trash.
The region will aim for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — known as LEED — certification in the building’s construction. Its doors are scheduled to open in September.
According to a statement released by the region, the new environmental centre will help achieve regional council’s stated goal of diverting 65 percent of waste from landfill by 2010.
