First day at Queen’s Park, new MPP wanders hall

“Good morning, Mr. Shurman,” repeated Queen’s Park staff as the rookie Thornhill MPP wound his way through the corridors of power Tuesday. Surprised, Peter Shurman said the warm greetings made him feel particularly welcome, especially since he’d never met any of them before — this was his first time ever inside the legislature.

An application to the provincial environment ministry to let a Maple transfer station increase the amount of waste it handles met with unanimous disapproval at city council Monday.

Councillors voted to send the ministry a strong message regarding opposing a loosening of the 61 regulations placed on the station at 10525 Keele St. — across the street from a residential neighbourhood.

Global Group’s seat of power

At 71 years old, Saul Feldberg still works 12-hour days.

After all, running one of Vaughan’s largest employers, making sure American presidents and Russian parliamentarians are comfortably seated is not your typical nine-to-five sort of job.

Auto parts maker cleans up

Martinrea International Inc., a Vaughan-based auto parts manufacturer, was recently announced as the sponsor of a public art exhibit, using 80 garbage and recycling bins to help beautify Toronto.

EcoMedia Direct Incorporated, which owns and operates the bins it calls “three-stream” SilverBox Public Space Recycling Street Art units, announced the partnership with Martinrea on Oct. 3.
